PLENTY OF PUMPKINS FOR FALL 2016
There will be plenty of pumpkins to go around this fall. According to Fortune magazine, the 2016 pumpkin crop is strong.
That comes as somewhat of a relief after 2015’s shortage due to heavy rains in the Midwest, which primarily affected the canned pumpkin industry. While Illinois has historically been one of the top pumpkin-producing states in the country, California is quickly making up ground due to higher yields and increased acreage. The state produced 146 million pounds of the fruit last year, behind Illinois’ totals of nearly 318 million.
Specialty pumpkins are also seeing a surge in popularity, with varieties like Cinderella, Fairytale and Knuckle Head in high demand.
